Adoption

Our goal at Roanchar Ranch Draft Horse Rescue is to match the right horse to the right adopter.  This involves filling out an application and submitting it to the rescue. If you have any questions, please contact us and we will be happy to help.

Fostering

Are you an experienced draft horse enthusiast, have an open stall, and are looking to make a difference in the life of a draft horse?  Join our team as a foster home and help us save the lives of more draft horses.  Fosters will need to pay for hay, feed, and farrier care.  Roanchar Ranch Draft Horse Rescue will cover the cost of vet care.  If you are interested, please fill out an application or email us at roancharranchrescue@outlook.com with any questions you have.

Companion Horses

Abe

Abe the haflinger

I am a 18-year-old Haflinger gelding.   I need someone patient, with a gentle hand, and who is willing to build my confidence without pushing me too far.  Once you have gained my trust, I am very loving and loyal.  I am a very easy keeper, I put weight on looking at a pasture, and I stand well for the farrier and vet.

Louie

Louie the Thoroughbred

My given name is Lucky and Cool, but everyone calls me Louie.  I am a 14-year-old Thoroughbred gelding.   I am full of personality and love attention.  I love to have my head scratched and pick up things with my mouth.  I have great ground manners, am perfect for the farrier and vet, and am an easy keeper. While I am not able to be ridden any longer, I still have lots of love to offer.

Pumpkin

Pumpkin by gate
I’m Pumpkin and I am a 15-year-old Haflinger mare looking for her forever home. I have an old leg injury that makes me unrideable. But don’t let that fool you—I have plenty to offer as a loyal and lovable pasture partner!

I am well-trained with excellent ground manners and am a dream for both the farrier and vet. I am as easy to handle as I am to love—calm, curious, and not the least bit spooky. I’m also not mareish, I get along great with other horses, and I am always respectful in the herd.

I love people, so don’t be surprised if I’m the first to greet you at the gate. I enjoy attention, stay engaged with my surroundings, and bring a gentle, grounding energy to the barn. Plus, I’m an easy keeper, making me a low-maintenance addition to your equine family.

If you’re looking for a kind-hearted companion with a golden coat and an even more golden personality, I’m your girl!

Sucess Stories

Apollo

Apollo running in the snow

Apollo, a 22-year-old Percheron cross, came to the rescue along with Ellie as part of a severe neglect case in New Jersey.  Apollo was 450 pounds underweight, and his front right leg was severely damaged after being broken at some point.  While having a hard life, Apollo’s loving personality always shone through.  After two years at the rescue, Apollo was adopted into a loving home in North Carolina along with Ellie.  Unfortunately, a few months after being adopted, Apollo’s damaged leg deteriorated, and he was humanely euthanized.

Ellie

Ellie in her adopted home

Ellie, a 30-year-old Belgian, arrived at the rescue as part of a severe neglect case in New Jersey, along with Apollo.  Ellie did not experience the same neglect as Apollo and arrived in fairly good shape.  She was, however, 95% blind, but you could never tell by the way that she traveled around the pasture.  Ellie found her forever home and traveled off to North Carolina with Apollo.  Today, she has several new draft friends and still loves to roam her pasture and go on adventures.

Bo

Bo, an 18-year-old Percheron, found himself in need of a new home when his owner was no longer able to care for him.  He found a new home at a riding facility that was looking for another horse to add to their program.

Trooper

Trooper, a 20+-year-old Belgian, needed a new home when his owners were retiring and moving.  It didn’t take long for a loving family to fall in love with him.  He is now a happy herd member and is starting to be retrained to ride.

Amos

Amos, a 22-year-old Haflinger, was in need of a new home when his elderly owners were no longer able to care for him or his 23-year-old brother Andy.   It didn’t take long for a young family to adopt them both.  They are now enjoying their time being ridden and bathed by their own little girl.

Andy

Andy, a 23-year-old Haflinger, was in need of a new home when his elderly owners were no longer able to care for him or his 22-year-old brother Amos.   It didn’t take long for a young family to adopt them both.  They are now enjoying their time being ridden and bathed by their own little girl.

Lander

Lander, a 21-year-old Clydesdale cross, found himself in need of a new home when his owner was no longer able to care for him.  He found a family, who was looking for a companion for their Brabant and spent the remainder of his days being loved and well cared for.

Magdalene

Magdalene, a 7-year-old Haflinger cross, arrived after being rescued from a severe abuse case.  It took her two years to trust humans again and to enjoy being ridden.  After being returned when an adoption did not work, she found her forever home with a partner that she loved unconditionally.  The two of them were the true definition of a team.  Unfortunately, Magdalene passed at the age of 13 from temporohyoid osteoarthropathy (THO), a progressive disease of the middle ear, the temporohyoid joint, the stylohyoid bone, and the base of the skull.
